Favourite anime of 2016

Posted on Updated on

Why not follow the trend and post my favourite anime of 2016. At first I was worried that I didnt have 10 anime that I really liked this year, so I had to spend like 15 minutes on the toilet looking through MAL and surprisingly I had more than 10. However, I’ll only be listing my 10 favourites, maybe listing honourable mentions.

*Also, the list isn’t in any order.

Starting of is………….

Boku No Hero Academia

First off is ‘Boku No Hero Academia’. Before, the anime actually started I remember the amount of hype there was. Not only was it written by Yōsuke Kuroda but it was also produced by studio Bones. So it was inevitable that the quality of its animaton would constantly compared to One Punch Mans animation. And Its pretty obvious that Bones did a fantastic job. The bright and vibrant colour scheme and childish artstyle, combined with the wonderful animation made the anime look beautiful and if it wasn’t for Mob Psycho 100, I would say that Boku No Hero Academia was by far the best looking anime of the year.

Boku No Hero Academia was your fairly typical shounen anime. It had a your typical protagonist with typical protagonist quirks *wink wink* with a typical shounen premise. So with all this taken into account, why did I enjoy it so much?… Well, I think it was just a really cool show. A lot of the background characters were really cool to watch (especially Shouto Todoroki and Momo Yaoyorozu). I usually don’t get hooked to these of anime, but I think this one had the right amount of everything for me to enjoy it. The comedy was great, the action sequences were epic and the characters were really cool. So the show just really appealed to me and I enjoyed watching each episode.

Rating: 8/10

Drifters was really unsurprising for me. I didn’t expect it to be this good. Infact, after the first episode I was considering dropping the show. I just thought that the show wasnt for me. However, after watching  the first battle scene I was HOOKED. After that, everything just kicked in. I started to see that everything as almost perfect; the comedy, the action, the characters, the writing, the music, everything. Also everything was executed perfectly for example, show that have characters from multiple timelines might get messy. However this show just managed to make the chemistry between the characters work, which was really unsurprising.

Season 2 has been announced and a new story line is unfolding. I have extremely high expectation, lets hope that they’re going to be met.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

Iron-Blooded Orphans is an interesting one. I started off watching the show as soon as it started airing, soon dropped it. The reason was because I got really bored, but I kept pushing myself because its Gundam. But I soon dropped it, but I put it on my to-watch list. I picked it back up in October but watched it with the dub simulcast and I really enjoyed it. It must have been the sub that put me off the series, however now I feel like watching some mecha series, so after watching all the ecchi series from the years 1999-2000, I might look for some mecha series to watch.

Anyway, the series was really fun and interesting. It was more mature than I thought it would be and the story was really intersting. The characters were great (with exception to Kudelia), and I really feel that it got the message across. I feel that the show sent the message of brotherhood and loyalty, which at the time was really impactful to me due to some other stuff I was going through. I havent started season 2 because the dub hasn’t been released but when it comes out I’ll be watching it straight away.

Days was a great show that I enjoyed greatly, so much so that I made a post comparison linking the players in seiseki to the barcelona players (read that here). MAPPA did a great job with this one. The animation was great and the music and voice acting made it really engaging.

They did something really clever with the protagonist in this show. What they did was create a future version of the protagonist and put him in the same place as our protagonist. What this did was make us know how Tsukamoto (the main character) was going to turn out and therefore watch the show more closely to look at how he was going to turn into a great player. The character by himself would have been really boring and generic, however with this technique, the audience would have been more invested into the character and the show. This wasn’t the only time the show was smart, I might post that separately but this show was great and was probably my favourite of the year.

Mob Psycho 100

This show was another interesting one. The biggest factor that made this show so memorable will be the animation, which was in a league of its own. The only reason why I liked this show was because the animation, the comedy (most times) and the tutor.Without him and his character, the comedy would have felt out place. I can’t really explain why the show was good, but I really like it because of what it achieved. Well done Studio Bones.

I can’t really think of anything to say about the show. There are definetly some more good points about it but I can’t think of any right  now.

ReLife was a surprise to me to be honest, I wasnt going to watch the show but I knew it was going to be a currently airing anime. So when I saw then thumbnail and it had episode 12 written under it, I was pretty surprised and seeing as though I had nothing to do I decided to marathon the show in one sitting. It was probably the most satisfying marathon I had. So basically, the main character ‘Kaizaki’ is like 27 and he was put into a program that made him younger so he could relive highschool life. And this was pretty cool because I’ve always thought of what it would be live as my younger self and this show had a pretty realisitic approach. I mean he was kinda pervy, and lazy compared to how you were when you was of a younger age. It was also pretty cool seeing highschool social life happening around the perspective of an adult, and it made me rethink what I should be taking seriously, but it also reminded  me that I’m only young once so I might as well make the most of it whilst I can.

Aside from that the character interaction were pretty fun to watch, seeing Kaizaki interact with the teacher made me laugh and the art was pretty. It was a solid show and I can’t wait to watch it in 10 years… Lets see what I think of it then.

Disastrous Life Of Saiki K

This was honestly the funniest show I’ve seen since Prison School. Honestly, I couldnt stop laughing. The writers of this show must have been geniuses of some shit, because everything about the show was done right. EVERYTHING. There wasn’t a single moment I wanted to take my eyes of the screen, this anime honestly had me by the balls. The thing about this show is that not everyone will like the show, some people might find it boring or not really appreciate the comedy. But for those who like this kind of comedy will definetly love what they are watching. The amount of times Saiki said what I would have said is most likely in its 1000s and even the other characters never got boring. Infact, the combination of having someone like Saiki and the others guys in one room would be quite funny. But having him actually be best friends with them, and being with them in almost every scene is something I would have thought would get boring eventually, but somehow it worked out prefectly.

I was surprised to find out that this show was a shounen. I remember watching a video by the pedantic romantic, where he explained why there was so much highschool anime, and I feel like this show kind of touched most points. Anyway, enough with this kind of mini review; I urge everyone to try this show. It was probably my favourite of the year.

Okusama Ga Seitokaicho Izumi

Now for my guilty pleasure from the year. Okusama Ga Seitokaicho Izumi. Honestly, this season wasn’t as strong as the first one. Only because the fan service wasn’t as ‘hot’ scenes wasn’t as frequent, but the story did advance alot and there was a lot more new fun characters being introduced to the show. This show was just something that I watched on a Monday to get me ready for my hentai session lol .I think theres going to be a season 3 released, I dont really remember the end scene credits but I would definitely watch it again.
